USURY

Where are the roses as their fragrance wafts
over the pleasant earth?  When we’re
oppressed, the years carve small lines
at the corner of our mouth.  Expect
nothing from the world’s princes.
Rather, just paste your lips shut.

Alice Shapiro studied poetry and playwriting with William Packard at NYU.  Her first collection of poems, Cracked: Timeless Topics of Nature, Courage and Endurance, was published by TotalRecall Press (2009) with a preface by Suffolk L.I. Poet Laureate David Axelrod, and was nominated for a 2010 Pushcart Prize and a GAYA award (Georgia Author of the Year).  She is also author of a chapbook, Seasons of the Heart published by Scars Publications (2007).  Two more volumes are due out in 2010 and 2011. Shapiro is also winner of the Bill C. Davis Drama Award for a verse play (Four Voices)
